Bernard O'Callaghan Memorial Senior Championship

Sponsored by McMunn's Bar and Restaurant Ballybunion
Semi Final

Report by Mairead O Sullivan

Finuge 1.09 v St Senans 3.09

We now have our first finalists for the 2018 Bernard  O Callaghan Senior Football Championship Final sponsored by Mc Munns Bar and Restaurant Ballybunion.  This game was played in Shannon Park Tarbert earlier today and we would like to thank Tarbert Club for the use of their fine facilities.  The first half started at blistering pace with two goals in the first 12 mins a goal a piece for each club Finuge coming from a well orcahrasted move by centre back Pat Corridan only for Full forward Ricky Heffernan to rattle the Senans net in the 8th min, in quick reply it was Senans midfielder Barry Mahony who kicked a long ball into the danger zone and corner forward Paudie Quille raised the green flag, but as they say goals win games and with St Senans adding two more from  the boots of Jason Browne and David Foran.   Finuge were always going to be chasing the game after that.  Half time score Senans 3.04 v Finuge 105.

Second half and it was a more subdued affair with tired legs on the pitch both sides through their bench at the game but the Senans men had all the hard work done in the first half and  now all  they had to do was  keep the scoreboard ticking over,  with 5 points added  in the second half two from frees,  to Finuge 4 points also 2 from frees it was always going to be Senans day.  full time score Senans 3.09 v Finuge 1.09 Next up is the Semi Final between Ballyduff and Ballydonoghue on Sunday next the 25th November at 2.30pm in Bob Stack Park Ballybunion and the Final will be played on Sunday 9th December at 2pm Venue T.B.C. Before the match started there was a minutes silence held in Weeshies Fogartys, John Connor and Patrick Stackpools honour. On behalf of all in the North Kerry Football Board we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the Fogarty Family and Radio Kerry on the passing of Weeshie who was a great friend to North Kerry Football. And also to the Connor and Stackpoole Families Lixnaw.

Weeshie Fogarty R.I.P

Where do I begin, when you heard the name Weeshie Fogarty in Kerry you thought of the journey through the  All Ireland series, the built up on Radio Kerry on match day and the personal touch of stories of those who are listing from a foreign land.  Afterwards we dissect the game agreeing or not with the Radio experts but looking forward to the Monday night analyses on Terrace Talk and believing we are there in the studio with them.

Weeshie brought that to our homes, his familiar voice, his easy way but to us in Kerry Weeshie Fogarty was no ordinary Radio Presenter he was Kerry Football.  His passion and knowledge was second to none, Weeshie didnt do big match research before games, he has been there, he has done it and he knows his players.  Every year Weeshie wrote a piece for the Bernard O'Callaghan Championship Final programme, and every year it was one of my favourite pieces to read. His knowledge of North Kerry teams, his projection of the beauty of the surrounds  and the way he can captivate the  importance to the people of their District Championship.

The last  year Weeshie wrote a article unfortunately was in 2015,  Weeshie had been missing from our kitchens, cars and homes during 2016 but was always on the tips of  everyone's tongue when it came to our Championship Final.  We in the North Kerry Football District send our sympathies to Joan his wife, son Kieran daughters Denise & Carolann and his extended family and his many friends.
