Beale GAA   13/06/2022

Beale seniors were defeated by Ardfert on Sunday in the County League, Division 4. A very low-scoring first half with both teams missing from placed ball. We trailed by 0-2 to 0-5 at the short whistle.

Ardfert seemed the slicker team and had missed goal opportunities, one brilliantly saved. We brought them back to within a point in the second half which was very much a start-stop affair. Our opponents popped over two quick points to put their stamp on the game. The final score read: Beale 0-6, Ardfert 0-10.

Beale lined out as: Seân Dee, John Griffin, Shane Joy, Jack O’Sullivan, Fionnán Toomey, Jeremy King, Seamie O’Sullivan (capt), Phillie Blake, Diarmuid O’Mahony, Conor Toomey, Robert Stack, Barry O’Neill, Ger O’Gorman, Neilus Mulvihill and Ian Mannix. Substitutes, Eric Daly for Diarmuid O’Mahony, Seân Maloney for Jack O’Sullivan and Pádraig Murphy for Barry O’Neill (inj.).

We now rank seventh on the table, with four wins from eight games. We will be hoping to redress the balance when we travel to Keel on Sunday. Throw in is st 2 o’clock. The following weekend, we travel to Cromane and our final round game will be against Austin Stacks B.

Beale GAA Club and the whole community are shocked and saddened by the sudden and untimely death of Maurice King.A character, a gentleman, a true legend, Maurice was a great ambassador of not just the Beale club but of the GAA.

An influential under-age and minor footballer, his playing career was cut short due to injury and Maurice turned his attention to the administrative side of the club.Former club vice-chairman, he represented Beale as delegate to the North Kerry Board and Shannon Rangers for many years.

He was a long-serving member of our executive committee. Actively involved in the club, he was a great fund raiser, promoting and supporting our draws, Strictly, Nite at the Dogs and all other activities. Maurice ran the Beale Lotto draw on Sunday nights for many years. He took charge of parking at matches, and, at the Beale Social and other gatherings, 'Bromore Security' was always on duty.

His nephew, Jeremy, carries on the strong football tradition. He has done the club proud as a prominent senior player, and wore the green and gold of the Kerry Juniors, bringing All-Ireland glory back to the seaside. Maurice was especially proud when Jeremy won a North Kerry Championship medal in 2014.

Thirty years earlier, his brother, Jimmy, had won his sixth North Kerry Championship medal, playing a pivotal role in Beale’s 1984 victory. A sharp-shooting forward, Jimmy emigrated to New York in the mid-80s, where he continued to fly the Gaelic flag.

Well known for his sense of humour and his wit, Maurice was a great storyteller and has regaled us down the years with colourful accounts of many events. He was the life and soul of every party.

With his singing voice in fine fettle, we will always remember his renditions of The Baling Twine and The Hi-ace Van. And how could we ever forget when he raised the rafters with his renowned ending to Annafrom Fermanagh?

A man with a big voice, a big heart, a big smile and a big personality, Maurice has left a massive void in Beale GAA Club. We have lost a very special friend. Gone but never forgotten, Maurice has left an indelible mark on all our lives.

Beale GAA Club extends heartfelt sympathies to Maurice’s mam, Kit, to Marian, Jimmy and Jeremy and to his extended family. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam dhíl. Slán agus beanbacht, Maurice.
