FIXTURES: NK Minor League Div2 shield final Ballydonoghue v Ballylongford/Asdee Sunday Sept 17th at 12noon. Venue TBC.

RESULTS: NK League Div 1 Final Ballydonoghue 2-13. Castleisland Desmonds 1-5.

Ballydonoghue had an easier than expected win over Castleisland Desmonds in the NK league Div 1 final to reclaim the title they last one back in 1994 when they defeated Knocknagoshel.

A Cian O’Connor pointed free for Desmonds opened the scoring after two minutes. Little did we think it would be the fifteenth minute before Desmonds would get their next score again from a placed ball. While in the intervening time Ballydonoghue’s Jim Cremin had got his side of the mark closely followed by points from Paul Kennelly, Jack Foley (who had to leave the fray with an injury soon afterwards) and Darragh Sheehy. Ballydonoghue were in flying form at this stage and in the second quarter added another five points before Desmonds would score again. On this occasion they would have the ball in the net when a shot came back off angle between crossbar and upright and out to the waiting Desmonds player and he had the easiest of tasks to finish to the net after 26mins. Half time score Ballydonoghue 9pts Desmonds 1-2.

It was no surprise that it was again Jim Cremin that got Ballydonoghue off the mark after five minutes of the second half. He certainly put in a shift and a half on Saturday evening and must have covered every inch of Frank Sheehy Park before the final whistle. And to prove the point a short time later he was on the end of a Padraig Lyons shot to tap into the Desmonds net. From here on there was only one team in it and with ‘man of the match’ Martin O’Mahony and his midfield partner Eamon Walsh in unforgiving mood we drove on from there. The final nail being driven home at the end of the third quarter and this time roles were reversed and it was Padraig Lyons who was on the end of a Jim Cremin shot to finish to the net after good work by Eamon Walsh to set the move in motion. Desmonds first score of the second half came after 17minsagain from a free. Cian O’Connor and Stan Divane with a point apiece tacked on two more before the end but these were cancelled out by two Ballydonoghue points.

A fantastic performance from both players and management teams. The league cup will make a fitting companion for the Eamon O'Donoghue Memorial Cup won in 2016. Congratulations to all.
