Barrett Cup

The Quarter Final of the Barrett Cup took place on Saturday evening last at Blennerville, between the home side and visitors, Clounmacon. Twas a blustery and showery evening, far from ideal conditions as Tom McCarthy started proceedings. A Chris Lyons free after 2 minutes was swiftly cancelled out by a Pats free. Timmy Mulvihill from play and a Lyons placed ball stretched it out to 2 but St. Pat's replied without delay. Paudie Quinn and Lyons again, made it 5 to 2 after 12 minutes, before the home side added a great point. Quinn made it 6-3 as some needle was entering the game and no one was being spared in the physical battle on show. Pats scored the next two points to leave the minimum between them at the short whistle. On resumption of the game Bryan Greaney scored a peach of a point but the saints quickly followed suit. Stephen Mc, having a whale of a game at wing forward, put the Black and Amber 2 up but St. Pat's rallied and scored the next 4 points in a dominant 12 minute spell. As the rain pelted down, Lyons drove over a huge score but the saints wouldn't lie down, getting their own long range point, 11 to 9 in front. In the next attack for Clounmacon, a hopeful ball went astray from the full back line and Paudie Quinn reacted quickest to poke home the first and only goal of the game. This was quickly followed by a Stephen McCarthy snapshot, 11 points to 1-10 with 5 minutes left. St Pat's attacked next and scored a 35 yarder, before ill discipline in the Black and Amber rearguard allowed St. Pats to level. With the game looking like it would take extra time to separate the sides, Joe Joe Grimes went a on a solo run and kicked a mighty point from 40 metres to land just over the crossbar. However Pat's attacked once again and won a free 35 metres from goal. It looked scoreable but the wind had other ideas and pulled it left of Shane O Sullivans posts. The Castleisland ref blew full time and Clounmacon had held on for a narrow victory. The side was almost at full strength but were a little rusty on the night, however they have developed a way of winning tight games and this test will stand to them no end. They've now reached the semi final where they will play the winners of St. Michael's Foilmore and Castlegregory. Final score, St. Pat's 0-13. Clounmacon 1-11.
