County Senior League Division 2Emmets 4-15 St. Pat's Blennerville 1-13

With the end of this years County League campaign in sight both teams came in to this game knowing that a win was of vital importance. Played in Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel on Sunday last it was the home side who picked up the points in impressive fashion. Cormac Mulvihill opened the scoring for Emmets inside 20 seconds after a great run through the heart of the St. Pats defence. The visitors were in front just a minute later however after a similar run from midfielder Paul McMahon finished with him drilling the ball past Keith Hughes for a brilliant goal. The next 10 minutes belonged to Emmets though as they settled more and more into the game with some fine scores coming from the two Keanes, David and Cathal, a Conor Cox free and one each from Mulvihill and David Sheehy to leave the score at 0-05 to 1-0 with 11 minutes on the clock. St. Pat's marksman David O'Callaghan fired over his sides first point of the afternoon before Cathal Keane got his second score after a great run from Emmets wing back Ger McCarthy. O'Callaghan added another just a minute later before the flood gates opened and Listowel took control of the game. The impressive Cormac Mulvihill who was finding it easy to breakdown the Blennerville side's defence, fired over his third point of the half after some good work from Bryan Sweeney followed by a sweet Sam Tarrant score with twenty minutes on the clock. The game was over as a spectacle inside the next four minutes as Emmets really upped the ante and St. Pats just couldn't handle their running and quick ball to the inside line. Cormac Mulvihill was first to find the net from a Conor Cox pass before Cox got his own goal just a minute later, fisting Tom McCarthy's long ball over Anton O'Callaghan's head. Sam Tarrant was next to raise the green flag as Emmets looked like they could score at will tormenting the visitors defence at every opportunity. They did not throw in the towel however as Brandon Boyle, David O'Callaghan and captain Liam O'Sullivan added points in between scores from David Keane and Bryan Sweeney to leave the half-time score Emmets 3-11 St. Pat's 1-05.

The second half started as one would expect with the Blennerville lads taking the game to Listowel, David O'Callaghan and Breandáin Savage landing a placed effort each before Conor Cox and Sam Tarrant cancelled these scores out. Pat's wing back Luke Mulligan got in on the act with a nice score off his right before the ever reliable O'Callaghan added his fifth of the afternoon with fifteen minutes left to play. Conor Cox and the industrious David Keane added two more for Listowel either side of a good score from Pat's centre back Kevin O'Shea but the nail in the coffin came in the 26th minute as substitute Rob Smith rounded Anton O'Callaghan for Emmets fourth goal of the afternoon to put the result beyond doubt. Two late frees from David O'Callaghan were merely consolation scores as Listowel ran out impressive winners on a scoreline of 4-15 to 1-13.

It's hard to pick out the better players for Emmets on the day as everybody played their part in some way but midfielder Cormac Mulvihill capped an outstanding performance coming away with a personal tally of 1-03. Round 9 of the County League will be played next weekend with Emmets travelling to Beaufort on Sunday afternoon.
