Novice Championship

Saturday evening saw the meeting of the home side Clounmacon versus Cromane take place in Parc na Gael in the novice championship. The sides had met before some years back but it was their first time doing so at this venue. Clounmacon attacked first and won a 45 which Robbie O Hanlon duly despatched to open the scoring. Former county star Sean O Sullivan at 14 won the next ball in, rounded 2 defenders and left footed to the net for their first score. Timmy mulvihill went on an attacking run, was hauled to the ground and Chris lyons slotted over the free. However it was from here when Cromane hit a purple patch with points from Paul o Sullivan (2), Carey, Houlihan(2), Casey and D Houlihan putting the visitors firmly in the driving seat. O Hanlon scored a great point from play after 17 minutes but shaughnessy and Carey pointed for the men in maroon before Sean Ban goaled again. Rob o Hanlon pointed his second 45 of the evening and Liam Walsh replied from play just before the short whistle. Half time 0-4 to 2-10. Disaster for the home side on the resumption as Houlihan netted early, however Stephen Mac was impeded in the square at the next attack for the locals. Up stepped Chris lyons and he placed it expertly to the keepers left. P O Sullivan kicked a 21 metre free for Cromane and lyons replied with his own 21 moments later. Mikey Houlihan got the next point for the visitors which was to be their last for the next 12/13 minutes as the black and amber took over the scoring stakes. Firstly a leg block lead to penalty number 2, this time lyons slotting home low to the keepers right. A great move was finished off by a rare Grimes left footer and great work by greaney produced a free which lyons duly obliged. Again lyons scored from play this time from 35 metres and moments later latched on another. Slight panic by the favourites at this stage as their lead was whittled from 15 down to 5 with 13 minutes to go. However the pendulum swung once again in the visitors direction with pointed frees from Darren and Mikey Houlihan and Lee Carey getting Cromanes first point from play in the 21st minute followed immediately by another. Emmet Carey made it a 10 point game shortly after before Cromane added their last score of the evening. The ever reliable Timmy mulvihill ended proceedings with a fine score from play before Jim O Connor sounded the last whistle. An entertaining game indeed where discipline was fantastic by both sides as all coloured cards remained in the refs back pocket. Clounmacon management, team and supporters can be very pleased with their display, with 4/5 players coming back after long injuries and absences and putting it up to Cromane for long periods of the encounter. All played well on the night but the Black and Amber best served by Dan Collins, Timmy Mulvihill, E Scanlon, JJ Grimes, R O Hanlon, B Greaney and C Lyons. Final score Clounmacon 2-12. Cromane 3-19.
