Asdee GAA   24/04/2017

MINORS.   Bally/Asdee  4-10  St. Pats, Blennerville  3-16.  Having reached the semi final stage of theCounty Minor League, Division 6 “B” our minor footballers had high expectationsof reaching the decider but in a high scoring contest played at O Rahilly Park,Ballylongford on Friday evening last it was the visitors who prevailed andbooked their place in the County Final. In fairness St. Pats seemed to have theupper hand on proceedings for the bigger part of the game and no doubt deservedtheir victory having enjoyed an interval lead of 2-10 to 0-7. On the changeoverthe home side upped their game and an early 1-1 from Liam Mulvihill had themback in the game. However Asdee/Bally now as they were enjoying plentypossession but their shooting in front of goals left a lot to be desired andreally this was to leave an uphill battle as St. Pats were more ecominical and  hit 3pts in a row followed by a well takengoal. Two black cards didn’t help the situation for the combination side butthey still battled away and substitute Anton O Connor struck for 2 goals alongwith another from Conor Carmody but the florish came too late to trouble theTralee side who finished with a deserved 3pt victory.

NOVICECHAMPIONSHIP. Due to teamsdefeated in the first round of the Junior County Club Championship they willnow take part in the Novice County Championship which threw up some interestingpairings which seems to be an all North Kerry affair in the early rounds withthe local St. Marys who went down to Listry taking on Moyvane who lost toTarbert at Brosnan Park, Moyvane on Saturday May 27th. Then the winners will playeither Beale or Ballylongford  away inthe next round. These two teams lost to Cordal and Kilgarvan respectively. Certainlyit will be a huge ask for Asdee to repeat the historic year of 2014 as numbershave become very tight due to injuries retirements and other commitments; butno doubt playing our near North Kerry neighbours at either side of us willbring out the best. Looking back to the year 2014 which will always hold aspecial memory in terms of this competition that will live forever in thehistory of St. Marys, Asdee G A A having been crowned Munster Junior “B”champions.

In the lead up; County success didn’tcome easy with some tricky games but was achieved  following an extra timedefeat of  Clounmacon, Renard were overcome at the semi final stage butprobably the victory that will live longest in the memory of everybodyassociated with Asdee football was certainly the winning of the County titlebut the manner in doing so and defeating  near neighbors and fellowparishioners Ballylongford  made it that bit extra special. And so asCounty Champions and representing the Kingdom we were then invited into theKnockaderry   Munster Junior “B” Championship organised by theLimerick club. This was an historic occasion;  and what a moment  forAsdee as they were mentioned in the same world as Dr. Crokes, Austin Stacks andBrosna  as representatives of the County and facing into the unknown. Inthe semi final the team saw off Feenagh/Kilmeedy but then at Knockaderry in theCounty Limerick a victory beyond our wildest dreams was achieved by defeatingCharlevill, County Cork champions by 0-9 to 1-5 to become Munster “Junior B”champions.
